SEO, Search Engine Optimization is something we hear a lot about, but do we really understand what it means? By definition (Dictionary.com) SEO is “the methods used to boost the ranking or frequency of a website in results returned by a search engine, in an effort to maximize user traffic to the site.” Essentially, if you want to be found quickly by your ideal customer when they search for services, making sure that you have an effective SEO plan in place is a must.
“How do I do this?” you may be asking. Don’t worry! In this article, we’ll show you three quick steps you can take to build an SEO presence of your own and how these quick improvements can be made, even if you don’t know much about how it all works.
Step 1: Review and Update Your Messaging
When users type in a search query, the search engine sifts through thousands of websites to find the ones that best match. So, in the most simple terms, having a SEO plan is ensuring your messaging matches what your ideal customer is searching for.
Sit down and review how you present yourself to the world. Basically, brainstorm. Think about how your customers search for you. What keywords resonate with the kind of work you do, and your demographic? Be sure to think in terms of your location and unique-to-your business keywords as well. Once you’ve come up with a list of words, take time to update your website to include them.

Be aware of what your competitors are doing and take lessons from those in the lead. If further updates should be made to your website based on your findings, follow through with getting that done. Then, spend the time updating your messaging on every platform you’re listed on. Sometimes your listings on other platforms may rank higher than your website, so make sure they are updated regularly!
And, Step 3: Sign-up for Google Analytics and Index Your Website
The process is simple, just a matter of accessing your Google account by clicking on Access Google Analytics and following the sign-up process. Once your analytics account is set up, you are able to review your progress, make edits to your website’s messaging, and improve your search results. You might realize that users are clicking on keywords that aren’t relevant to your business. Or, a webpage on your site isn’t user-friendly, deterring potential customers. We suggest reviewing your site’s analytics at least once a month.
After you’ve made updates to your website, make sure to index it, (also known as having Google recrawl your site)! While it can take 3 – 4 months to really see your new SEO kick into action, indexing after updating assures that search engines will read your newly updated website. If you skip this step, it can take up to 30 days for Google to crawl, (or read), your website’s new content.
